Testing Tools

Best Regression Testing Tools

Teams that need to re-check existing web application behaviour after each release and want to choose between frameworks, platforms and managed options.

By Testivra Team · Reviewed 2026-10-30 · No hands-on testing

Who this guide is for

This guide is for teams that re-check existing web application behaviour after every release and are choosing between an open-source framework, a commercial platform and a managed service.

A regression suite, the set of checks re-run after each change to confirm existing behaviour still works, grows with the product. The profiles below focus on how each option groups, re-runs and reports those checks.

What a regression tool must do

Four capabilities separate a regression tool from a script runner. Each is a selection criterion below.

  1. Run the same functional check against a web application repeatedly, with the same steps each time.
  2. Group checks into suites, tags or groups so a team can re-run the set a change affects.
  3. Report pass or fail per check, not only per run.
  4. Keep at least one artefact per check, such as a log, screenshot or trace, so a failure can be investigated.

Selection criteria

An entry is profiled only when every criterion below is confirmed on the vendor's own site or, for company facts, by a second source. Entries are listed alphabetically; the order is not a ranking.

  1. The tool runs repeatable functional checks against a web application per the vendor's or project's own documentation.
  2. Checks can be grouped and re-run (suites, tags or groups) per documentation.
  3. The tool reports pass and fail per check with at least one artefact (log, screenshot or trace).
  4. The tool is generally available, in beta or in early access; stage labelled from the vendor's site.
  5. Open-source frameworks are included and labelled "framework (you build the suite)"; platforms and managed services are labelled accordingly.

Stage
Generally available[1][10]
Pricing
Automate Desktop from $99/month billed annually; Percy Desktop from $199/month billed annually[1]
Website
www.browserstack.com/automate

Strengths

  • Automate runs existing Selenium, Playwright and Cypress tests on a hosted browser cloud, in parallel across many browsers.[2][3]
  • Builds can be organised by build name, tags and project, and flaky tests can be re-run automatically.[4][5]
  • Test Reporting & Analytics flags flaky, always-failing and newly failing tests and analyses logs, stack traces and screenshots.[6][7]
  • Percy captures screenshots, compares them with a baseline and highlights visual changes.[8]

Limitations

  • Automate and Percy run on top of the customer's own test scripts (Selenium, Playwright, Cypress or Storybook); the suite is written by the team.[2][9]
  • Automate plans are priced by the number of parallel tests that can run at the same time.[11]
  • Automate, Percy and reporting are separate products with separate plans on the pricing page.[1][10]

Best-fit scenarios

  • A team that has a regression suite and wants to run it in parallel across many browser and OS combinations without maintaining its own grid.
  • A team that groups runs by build, tag and project and wants flaky-test re-runs and failure reports per build.

Cypress

Best for: Framework (you build the suite): JavaScript teams testing web flows in a real browser

Type
framework
Stage
Generally available[18][23]
Pricing
Open-source app free (MIT licence); Cypress Cloud Team starting at $67/month, billed annually at $799[18]
Website
www.cypress.io

Strengths

  • Cypress runs end-to-end tests in a real browser and captures screenshots automatically when a test fails during cypress run.[12][15]
  • Specs are organised by feature, with describe() blocks grouping related scenarios.[13]
  • Cypress Cloud records runs with DOM, network events and console logs, and flags tests that pass only on a retry.[16][21]
  • Cypress Cloud parallelises specs across machines and can re-run only the tests that failed.[17][14]

Limitations

  • Specs are written in JavaScript or a flavour of it, such as TypeScript.[20]
  • Run replay, parallelisation across machines and flake detection are Cypress Cloud features, priced separately from the open-source app.[19][18]
  • Cypress Cloud plans are priced by the number of test results per year.[22]

Best-fit scenarios

  • A front-end team that writes regression specs in JavaScript or TypeScript next to the application code.
  • A team that wants failed CI runs replayed with DOM, network and console detail through the optional Cypress Cloud.

  • Accessibility testing and on-prem deployment are listed in the Enterprise plan.[134]
  • Pricing is quote-based.[133]

Best-fit scenarios

  • A team that wants smoke and regression plans run from GitHub Actions, Jenkins or Azure DevOps on each build.
  • A team that needs cross-browser regression runs with logs, screenshots and video for each failure.

Listed on G2.

Not included and why

  • Selenium. Criterion 3 fails: Selenium's documentation states it is not designed to report on the status of test cases run, leaving pass/fail reporting to a separate unit test framework.

Framework or platform: how to decide

Short answer

A framework such as Playwright gives your engineers a test runner with assertions, tracing and parallel runs[137]; your team writes, groups and maintains every check. A platform adds hosted runs, dashboards or generated steps on top, and a managed service adds people who write and maintain the suite for you[138]. Choose by who will own the suite a year from now, not by the first week of setup.

Teams with engineers who already write code-based tests tend to start with a framework and add hosted infrastructure when run times grow. Teams without that capacity tend to compare platforms and managed services, where the trade-off is how much of the work moves outside the team.

For how regression checks fit a release workflow, with a sample of grouped checks and their outcomes, see the regression testing use case.
